Officials from Ethiopia’s Ministry of Education recently benefited from a specialized training session offered free of charge by the Africa Research Capacity (AFRECAP) initiative. The workshop focused on one of the most crucial skills for securing external funding—writing clear, compelling, and competitive grant proposals.
The training highlighted both the dos and don’ts of proposal development, drawing on AFRECAP’s extensive experience reviewing successful submissions as well as proposals that were declined. By analyzing real-world examples, participants gained practical insight into what funders look for, common pitfalls that weaken applications, and the elements that make a proposal stand out in a highly competitive environment.
During the session, AFRECAP facilitators emphasized the importance of clearly defining the problem a project intends to address, demonstrating evidence-based need, and articulating measurable outcomes. Participants learned how to build strong narratives supported by data, craft realistic budgets, and align project goals with donor priorities. The training also covered frequent mistakes—such as vague objectives, inconsistent budgeting, and lack of sustainability planning—that often lead to proposals being rejected.
Officials expressed appreciation for the opportunity, noting that the session significantly boosted their confidence and capacity to seek external funding for educational initiatives. Many highlighted that the practical examples provided by AFRECAP offered clarity on how to improve their own proposals and enhance the Ministry’s ability to secure support for national education programs.
By offering this free capacity-building session, AFRECAP reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening institutional competencies across Africa and supporting government agencies in developing well-structured, impactful, and fundable project ideas.
